West Africa: First Set of EU-Ecowas Scholars Graduate

The British Council, in partnership with the European Union (EU) and ECOWAS, has announced the graduation of its first set of scholars in Sustainable Energy.

In a press statement on Tuesday, the EU said the graduation ceremony will be held as part of activities to mark the 2025 edition of Europe Day.

It said the "one-hour online event will showcase the journeys of the 40 dynamic young scholars from the ECOWAS region--emerging leaders in West Africa's renewable energy space--who qualified to complete specialised 2-year Master's degrees in leading universities across West Africa, fully funded by the EU-ECOWAS Scholarship Programme.

"Their stories are a testament to the power of education, international partnership, and determination to create sustainable solutions for Africa's energy future".

The statement further invited young professionals who are passionate about clean energy, women dreaming of a career in sustainability or just curious to know how to apply for the scholarship to attend the gathering.

"Attendees will hear inspiring stories from graduates, many of whom are women breaking barriers in the energy sector, get exclusive insights into the EU-ECOWAS scholarship and find out how to apply for the next round, engage directly with programme partners and industry experts during the interactive livestream and celebrate Europe Day in a meaningful way--by witnessing the real impact of global cooperation and education.

The statement called on the public to register to join the celebration via https://bit.ly/EDEUECOWASscholars

The scholarship programme is a joint effort by the European Union, ECOWAS, and the British Council to foster long-term capacity building and skills development in a region rich in renewable energy potential but in need of technical expertise.

"The EU-ECOWAS Scholarship Programme for Sustainable Energy is not just an academic initiative; it is a powerful demonstration of international partnership and investment in Africa's future," said Donna McGowan, Country Director of the British Council Nigeria.
