- The Gambela State Health Bureau has announced ongoing efforts to improve public health in collaboration with key partners, aiming to enhance healthcare accessibility and equity across the region.
Speaking exclusively to The Ethiopian Herald, the Gambela State Health Bureau Head Abel Assefa (MD) stated that a range of activities are being implemented to bolster the state's health sector. "We have seen significant progress through the construction of maternity hospitals, expansion of ambulance services, and support from various projects," he said.
Recently, the European Union (EU) donated ambulances, field vehicles, and motorbikes to four emerging regions -- Gambela, Benishangul-Gumuz, Afar, and Somali -- in a bid to strengthen public health services in underserved areas and advance health equity throughout Ethiopia.
Abel highlighted several key interventions undertaken by the Bureau, including public awareness campaigns, drainage of waterlogged areas, and the distribution and proper use of mosquito nets (known locally as agober), particularly in malaria-prone zones. "We have distributed mosquito nets and anti-malaria medications across four districts -- Dima, Gudere, Gishina, and Gambela town -- as well as within refugee camps this fiscal year," he said.
Currently, Gambela State has five hospitals -- one comprehensive and four primary hospitals -- along with several health centers and stations. However, infrastructure challenges remain, particularly in Akobo district.
"Akobo lacks sufficient health infrastructure. There is a health station, but no advanced services. We transport medical professionals and supplies by boat, and if the boat fails, healthcare delivery comes to a halt," he explained.
Despite the notable progress, Abel emphasized that critical gaps persist in the state's health infrastructure. "We still don't have advanced diagnostic tools like CT scans. To address these challenges, we are working closely with the Ministry of Health and development partners to build a healthier society across Gambela and its neighboring areas," he added.
